They could point you to a restaurant with lower priced food that tastes decent and doesn’t break your budget. You can also dine with them and split a cheque, which is sometimes cheaper if you were to just dine alone. Sometimes friendly locals will even invite you into their home for a meal in return for a small contribution, allowing you to see the real cooking of the area.

With all of these things, you should be able to be able to keep yourself hydrated, keep up with your nutrition and allow yourself to sight see as much as you can. Whether that be on a bowl of soup and a plate of bread (which can be very filling in a lot of cases) or a nice meal and a glass of wine. There are many options out there for you to eat out on a budget, and still experience the cuisine of a foreign culture.
